Where to start?
Interest to become a teacher online had grew significantly this last year due to COVID. Because of that, online teaching platforms had to adapt to the growing demand and growing applicant and some tips to have the best chances to be accepted.
Step One: Check the Language List!
In this link here, you find whether or not the language you would like to teach is open. This is the first step because if it is not open you will have to wait to apply. This list changes every week on Mondays at UTC +8 time.
Difference between Italki Professional Teacher and Community Teacher – A professional English teacher for example is someone that has experience teaching English in schools, has a TEFL certificate and/or has an educational background. A community teacher is a native of that language.
TIP:
We know that there will be limited spots despite the language being open therefore my suggestion is to prepare your profile, information/certificates and video even though your language is closed and be prepared. Therefore if on Monday it opens up you can apply almost instantly and have a better chance gaining one of those limited spots.
Step Two: Fill in your teacher profile and upload your teacher video.
- Profile information: including photo, name, languages you would like to teach, and bio:
- About Me
- Me as a Teacher
- My Lessons and Teaching Style
- A 1-3 minute video introduction (Video Requirement)
- Any certification/necessary documents for professional teachers
Step Three: Application Review
Only if you complete all of the requirements will they review your application. Once you send it through, you will be notified on the approval or disapproval of your application within 10 business days. Note that this is only a pre-approval! You will only be officially approved once you complete Step 4.
Step Four: Final Step
1. Final information is requested (identity request: driver’s license, passport, etc)
2. Review the teacher videos (takes around an hour – an hour and a half) and then the quiz. This all has to be done at the same time together so I suggest to carve out at least three hours to complete this step.
3. Finally book an introduction Zoom session where you and other incoming Italki teachers will be given the final onboarding onto the website. In my experience, the Italki leader will more talk at you rather than it being an active back and forth conversation.
TIP: Stay until the very end to confirm your attendance.
